Herengracht 392A + B

Herengracht 390 and 392 form a twin pair of sandstone neck gables dating from 1665, built in the Dutch Classicist style and attributed in the literature to Justus Vingboons. The flanking wing pieces carry a male and a female figure holding blank escutcheons; at number 390 the two hold a cord between them, symbolizing the marital bond. The property is protected as a national monument (rijksmonument) under number 1831. Alongside the façade, the official register description expressly includes the sculpted entrance steps and the cellar frontage.

Behind that façade lies a classic Amsterdam arrangement of front house and rear house, divided into two cadastrally separated apartments: a generous principal apartment spanning the ground and lower ground floors, and a self-contained lower-ground-floor apartment with its own entrance. Beyond it, concealed between the buildings of the Herengracht and the Keizersgracht, lies a town garden of some thirty metres in depth — an exceptional feature on the Herengracht.

Since 2010, the seventeenth-century canal ring within the Singelgracht has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. To live here is to live within an internationally recognized example of urban planning and water management from the heyday of the Dutch Republic.
